Besides Hawaii being one of the few states that you are allowed to do this, Hawaii's one of the few states that will go down fighting to keep this from being outlawed. Hawaiians just do it. It feels good. And it's really the only cool way to see Hawaii. The wind in your hair, your back to the tailgate and the stereo blaring at full volume from the cab is the Hawaiian way to roll. From the back of the truck you don't have a roof that blocks your view of the scalloped cliff of the Ko'olaus or your view of the intricate lines the tree canopy makes on the Big Island; and how else are you going to fit half a dozen Hawaiians in a car made for two?
But on the other hand, there are the ever so unfortunate consequences of getting into an accident, we should never forget. Not a single passenger in the bed has a seat belt and there aren't many things you can hold on to. Your body won't have much protection if you were to fly out of the vehicle, unless you were on your way to a football game and were riding completely dressed, including your helmet. Aside from that you can only hope for the best outcome. There are those who try to talk on their cellphones while riding in the back. Yeah, that's real smart. Not too many like receiving calls from these people because it goes like this...
(wind muffle...)
Hello?
Hello?
Hello? I riding in the back of a truck...I can't hear you...speak up (more wind).
Person on the other end: (Hang up).
