Among Hawaiian youth, no school's acceptance is coveted, envied, and perhaps dreamed of more often than Kamehameha Schools. First, only youth of Hawaiian ancestry can attend this school. Second, the few that are accepted, these Hawaiian students have the best facilities to surround themselves by, the highest curriculum by which the faculty and staff uphold to, the longest track record of discipline and honor in the state of Hawaii, and don't forget, the best lunches any educational institute has to offer. Any child accepted into any one of these schools (Oahu, Maui, or Big Island) has the special opportunity of learning in an environment where they treat you, well, like a Hawaiian ought to be treated, with respect, dignity, pride and honor. While students who are not accepted into these schools, well, they'll need to study in an environment where they are treated you just like, well, people.
It is not easy to get accepted to Kamehameha Schools, some students try up until their junior year in high school and not get an acceptance letter. And it is not easy to graduate from there either, students can get expelled for defiance and not upholding school standards, which only brings shame and dishonor to both family, and the fact that you are representing Hawaiians, shame to the Hawaiians too. A great deal of pressure can be placed upon these youth, as well as a great deal of responsibility because unlike their public school counterparts, the Kamehameha School kids have everything to lose and in someways little to gain. While public school kids have nothing to lose, but yet, everything to prove and gain.
